Life as an Army Dentist can be an amazing experience. There’s travel, challenges, sports, training and the freedom to perform high-quality dental work.
Looking after the oral health of Army personnel all over the world is the job of a Dental Officer. The Royal Army Medical Service (RAMS) can be found everywhere from large, nine-chair practices on huge Army bases to small mobile surgeries on operations. You’ll experience plenty of both during your career.
There’s also plenty of independence. You choose the treatment you think is best – not what the patient can afford. What’s more, you’ll get a non-contributory pension, further professional training and the chance to do sports and Adventurous Training. And if you're currently a dental student you may eligible for the Army’s Undergraduate Bursary scheme.

The Royal Army Medical Service (RAMS) has taken care of the Army’s dental health for more than a century and continues to provide high-quality dental care to the Army both in barracks and on operations. Wherever in the world the Army operates, you will find the Dental Officers and Dental Nurses of the RAMS.

Reserve (part time)
Entry requirements
Age:
From 17 years & 9 months to 54 years & 11 months
Qualifications:
Qualified dentist with active registration with the General Dental Council (GDC). Clinically Qualified, Current and working in this field
Basic physical fitness assessment:
Mid Thigh Pull 50kg
Medicine Ball Throw 2.7m
MSFT (beep test) level 5.8
Training for the role
Step 1
You will complete two, two-week courses at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, which form the basis of your military training.
Step 2
Trade-specific training will depend on your civilian qualifications and experience.
Qualifications you could get after training
On successful entry into the Army Medical Services Reserve you will be eligible to apply for consideration for professional qualifications commensurate to your role within with the Army Medical Services.
Pay & benefits
You'll be paid on a daily rate commensurate to your qualifications. This includes being paid for weekly drill nights. Plus, if you complete all of your annual training days, you’re entitled to a tax-free lump sum called a bounty.
