ABOUT ARMY PAY

You’ll receive an annual review to ensure that you’re able to progress through the ranks – and this means that you’ll unlock higher pay as you progress.

Some Army jobs pay higher than the standard rate of pay. These are typically specialist roles.

You can find the specific details about how much you will be paid for each role on rolefinder.

Soldier pay

Current rates of pay for Soldiers just starting out in these ranks are:

  • Recruits & Privates: £26,334 a year

  • Lance Corporal: £34,083 a year

  • Corporal: £39,565 a year

  • Sergeant: £44,423 a year

Officer pay

The current rates for officers just starting out in each of these ranks are:

  • Officer cadets (at Sandhurst): £34,676 per annum

  • 2nd Lieutenant: £41,456 per annum

  • Captain: £52,815 per annum

  • Major: £66,240 per annum

Army officer pay is in line with other graduate jobs.

Pensions

The Army will pay all of the contributions towards your pension. If you serve for more than 20 years you'll also get a tax-free lump sum.
