Unlock your potential with Army Apprenticeships
An apprenticeship is a way to gain recognised qualifications while on the job and getting paid, making them the perfect alternative if learning in a classroom isn't for you. You'll receive training in your chosen field, earn nationally recognised qualifications, and develop skills that are valuable both in and out of the Army.
How it works
We have over 13,000 apprentices currently enrolled from Level 2 - 4 and Level 6, as progression later in your career, across more than 40 different programmes.
You’ll do the apprenticeship, or an equivalent nationally recognised qualification, most relevant to your job role alongside your Initial Trade Training (ITT) and subsequent trade training. The apprenticeships are designed with other employers, ensuring the training provided is to industry standards and approved by the industry regulated public appointed body. This means that while learning your role in the Army you’ll be getting hands-on experience in that field which will count towards your apprenticeship.
Later in your Army career, you can apply for our Leadership and Management apprenticeship at degree level. Every Army job offers a chance to advance and gain professional skills, leading to higher qualifications.

The Army has a diverse range of apprenticeships. The type of apprenticeship you complete will depend on your role in the Army, and with over 40 different apprenticeships available here are just some of the ones you could be doing:

There are three levels of apprenticeships for entry level soldier roles.
LEVEL 2 - Intermediate
Intermediate Apprenticeships are the first level available. Gaining a Level 2 apprenticeship is the equivalent of getting five good GCSE passes.
If you have not got GCSEs in Maths and English at grades 4-9, we’ll help you gain Level 1 functional skills as part of the Level 2 apprenticeship, which is an alternative qualification to GCSEs.
The apprenticeship normally takes 12-18 months. You’ll start your Apprenticeship in initial trade training and put your knowledge into practice with your Field Army unit.
LEVEL 3 - Advanced
Advanced Apprenticeships (Level 3) are equivalent to two A level passes or a T level pass. If you already have Level 3 qualifications, including A levels, the Advanced Apprenticeship is a great way to gain practical, work-based skills and experience in a particular job and sector.
There are no entry requirements, but some Level 3 apprenticeships require mandatory qualifications that the Army will facilitate in delivering. However, you must have achieved Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Maths, the equivalent to GCSE 9-4/A*-C, on completion.
The apprenticeship takes 18-36 months. You’ll start your Apprenticeship in initial trade training and put your knowledge into practice with your Field Army unit.
LEVEL 4 - Higher
Higher Apprenticeships (Level 4) are equivalent to a foundation degree (first year of an undergraduate degree).
There are no entry requirements. However, you must have achieved Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Maths, the equivalent to GCSE 9-4/A*-C, on completion.
The course takes 18-36 months. You’ll start your Apprenticeship in initial trade training and put your knowledge into practice with your Field Army unit.
GET SKILLS. GET QUALIFIED. GET CONFIDENCE.
Why Army Apprenticeships
Why the Army

Money
Earn while you learn. In the Army you get paid a full salary as a soldier not just as an apprentice, you’ll be earning far more than most apprenticeship schemes offer.

Experience
You are getting ‘on the job’ training with equipment and in environments that are more varied, interesting, and challenging than those you would experience working in the civil sector.

Support
You will always have support and guidance on hand from fully trained experts, but as a qualified soldier you are in a trusted position with responsibilities.

The Job
You’ll be paid and trained as a soldier but an apprenticeship in the Army will allow you to be the best you can be in your role, as well as assist in your progression. You can also upskill with civilian qualifications linked to your enlisted trade.

Career
The apprenticeship is just the start of many opportunities within the Army to gain further qualifications throughout your career. The Army invests in career-long development.
