Army Officer Internship

Anyone with, or seeking, a firm place to read a first degree at a University or College, or who has graduated within the last 2 years, can apply.

You should also:

• Be aged between 17 years 9 months and 28 years old by mid- September of the year you will start training at Sandhurst.

• Hold or be predicted to gain 72 UCAS points (or equivalent) and have 35 ALIS points, including a C/4 or above in English language, maths and a science or foreign language.

• Be physically fit.

You must pass the Army’s Officer Selection Board and have at least obtained a firm place to read a first degree by the time you start your internship.

Internships start in September each year.

As an Infantry Internship Officer you will be assigned to a platoon within an infantry battalion. who will lead in all elements of its programme.  You should expect exposure to the complete range of activity involved in commanding an infantry platoon – including tactics, weapon handling and fieldcraft, but mostly leadership. You will also get experience of all in-barracks and field training including overseas exercises as well as sport, adventure training and intellectual development. You may be detached to other units within the Regiment or Division for set periods to take advantage of a particular training or travel opportunity.

UK, Cyprus, Brunei and Gibraltar based infantry units (Lt, Mech, Armd, Ghurkha and Para).

Special to training:

Platoon Commander’s Battle Course (Reserve)

Opportunities:

• 5 different roles of Infantry (armoured, mechanised, light mechanised, light and airborne)

• A very wide range of overseas training opportunities (depending on battalion): Canada, Falkland Isles, Kenya, Middle East, East Africa, North Africa, Lithuania, North Canada (Arctic Training), Brunei.

As an Internship Officer in the Royal Armoured Corps (RAC) you will given the chance to work and train within a front-line mounted close-combat regiment. As a mounted close combat specialist you will learn to live, work and fight on armoured fighting vehicles. This is a demanding role and requires fit, capable candidates.

Depending on suitability you can apply to serve with one of three capabilities; Lt Cavalry, Armoured Cavalry or Armour. There may also be the chance to serve with the Household Cavalry mounted regiment.

Units/locations:

UK based Artillery (Close Support and Precision Fires), Air Defence, Target Acquisition and Remotely Piloted Aerial System Regiments, with an opportunity to undertake arduous training (Para / Commando)

Special to Arm training delivered in unit (following RMAS).

Wide range of UK based exercises including:

• Mounted (role to be defined. Possibly as a wheeled or tracked vehicle commander. This will be dependent upon policy and training that is achievable within the time frame).

• Combined Arms Battlegroup simulators.

• Battlegroup Headquarters.

• Possible deployment on overseas exercises (Kenya/Canada).

• Adventurous training.

As a Royal Artillery (RA) Internship Officer you will be exposed to extensive command opportunities as you fully integrate within our Units. This will help you to develop transferable leadership and management skills through the use of military and adventurous training and ensuring a beneficial and fun time is had by all.

Travel, challenge and variety are guaranteed as you participate in the units readiness cycle, providing a chance to experience overseas exercises, arduous training and exposure to the wider Army.  The variety in the Gunners allows us to offer Internship Officers the option of spending time with more than one artillery platform to better understand the full capability of the RA. 

Units/locations:

UK based artillery (Close Support and Precision Fires), air defence, target acquisition and remotely piloted aerial system regiments, with an opportunity to undertake arduous training (Para / Commando).

Opportunities:

Overseas training opportunities in Kenya, Jordan, USA and mainland Europe depending on allocated Regiment.

As an Internship Officer with the Royal Engineers (RE) you will be given the opportunity to live and work in an engineer regiment which specialises in one of the Royal Engineer capability fields:

• Close Support (obstacle creation, demolitions, and gap crossing) which has airborne, commando, mechanised and armoured variants,

• Force support (construction tasks, repair and protection of infrastructure),

• Explosive ordnance disposal & search (EOD&S),

• Geographic support and counter-chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (C-CBRN) warfare.

The emphasis on an RE Internship is embedding you with your unit to experience regimental life, gaining a deep insight into how a unit works and life both in camp and when deployed on exercise. This gives you many opportunities to put into practice the leadership skills learnt on the Commissioning Course.

Technical backgrounds are not required - our officers, Regular, Reserve and Internship, come from a wide range of academic backgrounds.

Units/locations:

UK based, Chivenor, Tidworth, Wyton, Wimbish, Woodbridge, Maidstone, Catterick, Ripon, or Kinloss. Officers should be prepared to be detached to other units to take advantage of training and deployment opportunities.

Special to training:

Delivered in unit with attendance of RE Reserve Officers Course if possible.

Opportunities:

Overseas – Sport, battlefield studies and adventurous training. Where available officers will deploy on overseas exercises, likely to Canada, Kenya and the USA.

As a technically strong Internship officer in the Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) you will spend time both in barracks and deployed on large Exercises in Canada or Kenya.  Experiencing military mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering, you will deliver technical support to Army equipment. You will also be given the opportunity to exhibit and challenge your leadership ability in the military, sporting and Adventurous Training environments.

Units/locations:

UK based armoured close support and close support battalions (including aeronautical engineering with apache helicopter support).

Special to arm training delivered as a bespoke Internship Young Officer course (following RMAS).

Opportunities:

Major overseas exercises and adventurous training opportunities.  Officers will command around 30 technical soldiers and will experience the lifestyle of the last Germany based brigade, and potentially deploy on overseas exercises  There will be an opportunity to command their tradesmen from a REME armoured vehicle.

As a Royal Signals Internship Officer you will be employed in the UK working within a Signal Regiment. Special to Arm training in a broad range of communications capabilities will be delivered in the unit where you will be able to experience commanding highly capable and technical soldiers on a variety of exercise deployments.  You will be able to work with satellite, radio and trunk communications and take part in adventure training and sport with both Royal Signals and Queen’s Gurkha Signals soldiers.

The Regiments selected for Internship assignments have roles supporting high readiness overseas deployments and the Vanguard Armoured Infantry Brigade.

UK based units including with Queen’s Gurkha Signals.

Sport and adventure training (AT) opportunities, including the possibility of overseas AT expeditions.

As an Internship Officers in the Royal Logistic Corps (RLC) you will have an opportunity to embed into one of 14 units delivering Logistic capability to the Fd Army, Commando or Airborne forces. You will experience training and leading soldiers from across our 16 trades. Placements are arranged on a personal basis to you and units commitments.

You can expect to experience a variety of Adventurous Training, unit exercises, including a Nordic or Alpine ski season and some will have the opportunity to complete an arduous course, or language training in Nepal. As an Internship Officer in the RLC you will receive a vast range of leadership, military and extra challenges prior to university studies.

UK based logistics units (including Gurkha, movement, air assault and port maritime).

Special to training:

Initial special to arm training delivered in unit (following RMAS).  Attendance on elements of RLC Troop Commanders’ Course at Worthy Down.

As an Internship Officer you will spend time with different Royal Army Medical Services (RAMS) units in order to gain an understanding of the full range of medical care provided by Medical Units, from Point of Injury to Role 3. This internship is open to prospective Medical Support Officers or those wishing to join as Regular or Reserve Professionally Qualified Officers (Nurse, Dental, Medical Officer, Pharmacist or Physiotherapist and other Allied Health Professionals) offering unique opportunities in both travel and leadership.

Units/locations:

UK based Medical Regiments / Field Hospital.
