British Army Officer Training

Officer training in the British Army is broken down into 3 terms across 42 weeks: junior, intermediate, and senior. Each stage builds on the last and hands you more responsibility, with an increasing focus on team leadership as you progress.

You'll finish with 3 field exercises overseas and a two-week final test. After that, you'll commission in front of friends and family and leave training to begin your career as an Army officer.

British Army Officers have trained at Sandhurst Military Academy for over 200 years. The Academy's reputation for leadership is why armies around the world send their own officers here, too.

The skills, values, and philosophy you'll develop during your time at Sandhurst will shape everything you do long after you've left the historic institution.

You'll be leading soldiers from early on, not waiting until you've "earned" it. A large part of your officer training is about nurturing your innate skills and building on that foundation with hands-on development.

Alongside that, expect to learn military tactics, weapons handling, fieldcraft, and soft skills like diplomacy and critical thinking. This is the start of your career, not just a leadership training course.

Classroom learning matters, but most days are spent applying what you learn on exercises, in the field, and under pressure. Leadership is something you get better at by doing, not just studying. That's deliberate and the real test of your time at Sandhurst.

When you're not training, you'll have your own room, meals in the mess hall with fellow recruits, and proper downtime to switch off with gyms, pools, and even a cinema room.

Physical fitness matters from day one, so it's good to get ahead of the fitness requirements before you arrive.

Beyond that, turning up curious and ready to be challenged goes a long way: read up on current affairs, leadership management, and military history while you prepare.
