2 minute watch

  • What the Army does
  • Belonging
  • Make a difference

If you’ve ever wondered what the British Army really does, you’re not alone. A lot of people think it’s just about fighting wars. But there’s so much more to it.

We asked real soldiers and officers — both Regular and Reserve — to answer one big question:
“What is the role of the Army?” Their answers might surprise you.

This blog is part of a myth busting series that helps explain what life in the Army is really like directly from the people serving in it.

Two soldiers in uniform sit and chat in a lecture hall. Text reads, "What is the role of the Army? Army Be The Best" with a UK flag.

It’s Not Just About Fighting

When people think of the Army, they often picture war zones and combat. But that’s only part of the story.

As one soldier puts it in the video, “The Army’s role is to protect the national interest of the UK — both here and overseas.” That means being ready to respond to all kinds of situations, not just conflict.

Three Key Roles: Protect, Defend, Support

One officer breaks it down simply: Protect. Defend. Support.

These three words cover a lot. The Army protects the UK and its people. It defends our interests around the world. And it supports communities — both at home and abroad — when they need help most.

A Force for Good

The Army is often called on to help in emergencies. That could mean:

  • Providing aid after natural disasters

  • Helping in post-war zones

  • Supporting local communities after floods, earthquakes or mudslides

As one soldier says, “If that means getting knee-deep in rainwater because a town has flooded — that’s where we’ll go.”

The Army is a force for good. A force for positive change.

If that means getting knee-deep in rainwater because a town has flooded — that’s where we’ll go.

Everyone Has a Role

You don’t have to be on the front line to make a difference. In fact, only around 30% of Army roles are combat-related. The other 70% are support roles — and they’re just as important.

Whether you’re an engineer, a medic, a signaller or something else entirely, you’re part of a team that makes the Army work.

As one soldier says, “Whatever your role is, you are a force enabler.”

Power, Purpose and People

The Army projects power abroad and keeps the country safe. But it’s also about people. Real people, with real stories, working together to do something meaningful.

You don’t need to fit a certain mould. The Army is made up of people from all backgrounds, with all kinds of skills. And there’s a place for you too.

Ready to Make a Difference?

The British Army is more than you might think. It’s about protecting, supporting, and making a difference — at home and around the world.
