A lot of people think you need to be super fit — like a professional athlete — just to get through the door. That stereotype can make joining feel out of reach, especially if you’re not already training or hitting the gym. So if you’re worried that you’re not fit enough to join the British Army, you’re not alone — but don’t worry.
We asked real soldiers, both Regular and Reserve, to answer one big question: “Do you need to be super fit to join the Army?”. Their answers might surprise you. Watch our video to find out what they said.
Let’s get straight to it: you don’t need to be super fit to join the Army.
One soldier laughed and said, “No no no,” when asked. Another added, “You don’t have to be super fit to join the Army.” That’s not to say fitness doesn’t matter — it does. But it’s something you build over time.
“They are there to train you, to build you up, and to get you across the finish line.”
That’s what basic training is for — to help you improve, not to test whether you’re already perfect.
When you join, you’ll take part in regular PT (Physical Training) sessions and fitness tests. You’ll be supported to improve at your own pace.
“We have fitness standards that you keep up with in the Army. We have real fitness tests, and soldier condition reviews.”
Training is progressive. You’ll start with phase one, which builds you up gradually.
“Phase one training will build you up to the level you need to be at.”
Even if you’re not the fastest or strongest, that’s okay. “I was always one of the last to come in during the fitness tests… but the fact that I turned up every time and didn’t give up to pass the tests, showed that I was willing to put the effort in.”
If you want to prepare, that’s great — but it doesn’t need to be intense.
“If you wanted to pass a fitness test, then you could do it with sort of three training sessions a week.” Even small steps can help.
If you want to do really well, you can train more — but it’s not a requirement.
“You’re not going to get in the Army unless you’ve got a level of physical fitness… but the training is very good.”
Fitness in the Army is about resilience, teamwork, and showing up — even when it’s tough.
“The fitter you can be, you’re going to have a head start. That’s fantastic. But do not worry.”
You’ll have access to gym facilities and get the chance to try out hundreds of sports — from football and rugby to climbing, boxing, and even skiing. Whether you’re already sporty or just curious, there’s something for everyone.
You’ll learn how to push through tough days and celebrate wins together. And you’ll get stronger — physically and mentally — as you go.
Lots of people worry about fitness before they join. That’s normal. But the Army is here to help you succeed.
We train you. We support you. We build you up.
You don’t need to be super fit. You just need to start.
