Thinking about a career in Army dentistry? You might be surprised by how much more it offers than just clinical work. From delivering gold-standard care without the pressure of cost, to discovering new passions and serving a greater purpose, Army dentistry is a career that challenges, rewards, and inspires.

Rachel shares what it’s really like to be a dentist in the British Army—and why it’s one of the most rewarding decisions she’s ever made.

Why I Joined the Army as a Dentist

“I wanted to give my patients the best possible care, without cost ever being a barrier,” says Rachel. “Joining the Army meant I could do that, while also living a life of purpose and adventure.”

As a dentist in the Royal Army Medical Service, Rachel delivers gold-standard treatment to serving personnel. But her role goes far beyond the clinic.

A Career That Surprised Me

One of Rachel’s most unexpected highlights? Horse riding with the Household Cavalry during a posting in Windsor.

“That experience sparked a passion I didn’t know I had,” she says. “Now I represent the Army in equestrian competitions. It’s something I never imagined when I first joined.”

What a Typical Day Looks Like

Rachel’s day starts with physical training - either a run or a weights session. Then it’s into the dental clinic for a morning of patient care, which can include:

  • Routine check-ups

  • Fillings and root canals

  • Crown and bridge work

After lunch with her team - often at the officers’ mess - she’s back in clinic for the afternoon. By 4:30 PM, she’s usually heading out for a ride.

“It’s a full day, but it’s fulfilling,” she says. “You’re always learning and improving.”

The Challenges - and the Rewards

One of the biggest challenges Rachel has faced is preparing large numbers of personnel for deployment at short notice.

“It can be intense,” she admits. “But knowing you’re helping people stay healthy and ready for operations—that’s what makes it worthwhile.”

The rewards? Working with great people, being pushed to grow, and improving the patient experience every day.
