Staying focused when things feel tough

Max’s journey didn’t start with instant success. Early on, he faced challenges with his fitness, including a higher Body Mass Index. Reaching the required standard felt tough, but he didn’t let that define what he could achieve.

Instead, he focused on what he could control - turning up, putting in the work, and staying committed to his goal.

Every week, he trained. Every week, he improved. And when things didn’t go to plan, he kept going.

Taking ownership of the journey

What stands out most is the attitude that Max brought with him from the start.

  • He stayed determined, even after multiple attempts at his fitness test.

  • He had strong support from his family, who were there every step of the way.

  • He took responsibility for his progress, even saving to invest in extra training.

This wasn’t about being pushed - it was about wanting it for himself.

Progress that builds confidence

Over time, that consistency paid off. Passing his fitness test became a turning point - proof that everything he’d been working towards was within reach.

From there, he took the next step and began training at the Army Foundation College, Harrogate.

A moment that makes it all worthwhile

Completing training and passing out was a proud and emotional moment - not just for Max, but for his whole family.

It wasn’t just about reaching the finish line; It was about everything he’d overcome to get there.

Being there, backing their decisions, and helping them stay motivated, especially when things feel difficult - can make a lasting difference.

Supporting young people to succeed

For Ray, there’s a clear message for other parents and those supporting young people: your encouragement matters.

Because with determination, support, and belief in themselves, young people can achieve something they’ll be proud of for life.
